In the car

404

This unusual exhibition took place in a parked car in the Marais district of Paris.

Each weekend a different artist took over the space with an original creation.

The installation questioned the permanence of the subject by playing on time, displacement and perception.

The parked car, a white Peugeot 404, had all its windows blacked out with Spanish white. Only two dark openings, on either side, adapted to the window openings, aroused curiosity. They opened onto boxes painted black. In the first one, if you listened carefully, you could hear a musical extract from a work by Brian Ferneyough. In the other, a flickering, blurred image of a pornographic nature could be seen with difficulty. Finally, on the back window was pasted an extract from Heidegger’s text about “Habitation”.

The ensemble, made up of several distinct stimuli, each requiring an “effort” on the part of the visitor, produced a kind of repeated self-forgetfulness. It was this fragmented experience, questioning the permanence of the subject, that constituted the work.
